BioReg Project: Absorbing the Potential of Wood Waste in EU Regions and Industrial Bio-based Ecosystems

BioReg project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement n° 727958. The project runs from January 2017 to December 2019, it involves 8 partners and is coordinated by “le CABINET D’ETUDES SUR LES DECHETS ET L’ENERGIE” (CEDEN).
BioReg project proposes to create a platform of stakeholders who are able to influence and develop their regions towards bio-based industries and products.

Demonstrator case studies have been selected among European regions – Gothenburg, (SE),  Baden-Wurttember (Ge), Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna (IT), North West England (UK) and Vorarlberg and Syria, Austria.

Those have set up renewable wood waste-based systems at different stages of the waste wood value chain including different wood waste source, pre-sorting, sorting, collection, recycling and wood waste treatment (to materials, biochemicals or biofuels) as well as the different gradings and regional wood waste composition in each country.

3 recipient regions were selected for this project in regards to their unused waste wood potential: Normandy (France), Lublin (Poland), Alentejo and Lisboa (Portugal).

The BioReg platform will function on two levels. On the EU level: best practices in terms of strategies and technologies as well as implementing mechanisms will be shared with the beneficiary recipient regions on the project and disseminated to many other potential regions in the EU (EUBIA). The platform will encourage the collaboration of members and stakeholders on the European level. On the regional level: the best practices will be replicated in the three beneficiary regions. The proposal offers collaboration with regional existing clusters, constructive dialogue with regional authorities and policy makers, industrial and RTD establishments in the recipient regions. It will mobilize the recipient regions to develop the existing potential for industrial innovative projects and build bio-based ecosystems. Industries, regions and investors will be brought together to establish an efficient dialogue so that demand and supply can be aligned and large impact projects can be realized.

The project proposes mechanisms to engage the stakeholders in collaboration also after the EU funding on BioReg is over.

The largest gathering of biomass experts – EUBCE 2019 will be held between 27th and 30th of May 2019 in Lisbon Congress Centre (Lisbon, Portugal). The leading platform for the biomass specialists addresses topics from biomass to bioliquids and biofuels for heat and electricity, transport and biobased products. It will cover all aspects of each value chain, from supply and logistics to conversion technologies, from industrial application of research results to impacts on the environment, from market and trade aspects to policy strategies, not least to the role of biomass as a source in integrated energy systems.

During the #EUBCE2019, BIOREG project will take the opportunity to participate in the conference and present the project achievements as well as promote the BIOREG European Wood Waste Platform

BIOREG project event will start on Wednesday, 29th of May from 15:15h. It will focus on valorising the potential of Wood Waste in EU Regions and Industrial Bio-based Ecosystems. Wood waste and wood residues are an important and underestimated source of biomass, which can be recycled for both material and energy use. There are several challenges to manage, treat and extract value from wood waste value chains. The BIOREG project will be engaging stakeholders for its platform who are welcome to join it and contribute and benefit to a common space of discussing success factors and transferring practices and solutions for the valorisation of wood waste.

The seminar will provide a presentation of the BIOREG project, the best practices and success factors among the European demonstration regions that have established relevant mechanisms throughout the entire wood waste management value chain (collection, treatment and recovery for energy and materials and product management – gas, ash or other waste resulting from the recovery processes). A final discussion with international experts and local stakeholders, open to the public, will complement the presentations.

From 12:00 to 14:00 o’clock BIOREG workshop with Eastern European participants: “BIOREG: Absorbing the Potential of Wood Waste in EU Regions and Industrial Bio-based Ecosystems” will take place in Royal Castle hotel, Elenite at the venue of the Ecology and Safety conference.


Dominique Boulday, Bioreg’s coordinator has featured in front of 170 attendees the Bioreg’s plaform during the symposium dedicated to waste wood in Normandy “12th Symposium on end-of-life wood, Le Havre”. This symposium of which Bioreg was a partner was a good opportunity to initiate the launch of the platform.
