WP1 : Study on EU regional wood waste ecosystems (M1-M6)

The first WP concerns the collection and synthesis of scientific and practical knowledge on wood waste including statistics, industrial wood waste ecosystems and state of the art. It selects best practices among European demonstrator regions, case studies which have set up renewable wood waste-based systems and district heating networks that allow for the control of air pollution and effective management of wood ashes. The objectives are as follows :

  • Gather statistics on wood waste ;
  • Collect practical knowledge on wood waste state of the art ;
  • Conduct a study of industrial ecosystems implemented in European model regions ;
  • Identify favourable legal, policy and institutional frameworks for the implementations ;
  • Select best practices for dissemination.

The WP is composed of the following tasks :

  • Task 1.1. Data collection of regional wood waste statistics, Lead partner : IUNG
  • Task 1.2. Review of State of the Art technologies: wood waste collection, sorting and treatment, Lead partner : EUBIA
  • Task 1.3. Study of industrial ecosystems implemented in European Demonstrator Regions, Lead partner : BRG
  • Task 1.4 Identification of a favorable legal, policy and institutional frameworks in recipient regions, Lead partner : ARBN

WP2 : Developing a classification of European model ecosystems and success factors in wood waste value chain

The data synthesized in WP1 will serve as the foundation to develop a general classification of model wood waste ecosystems and a toolbox of success factors, which will be disseminated through the BioReg platform and enable beneficiary regions to adopt models that fit them best. This toolbox will provide useful lessons to both policy bodies and industries in recipient regions.

The specific objectives of WP2 are as follows :

  • Develop a general classification of EU model wood waste ecosystems ;
  • Identify success factors ;
  • Draft recommendations to both industrial and policy organizations for the replication of successful case studies.

The WP is composed of the following tasks :

  • Task 2.1. Mapping and typifying EU regional ecosystems, Lead partner : IUNG

WP3 : Multi-stakeholder platform preparation (M1-M30)

WP3 aims to establish a multi-stakeholder platform encompassing several regions with strong potential for wood waste valorization. The platform will be designed through consultations with industry and policy stakeholders with differing regional needs and requirements. The setting up of the management structure of the platform will be accompanied by the design and development of a web platform to support all project activities and enable stakeholder interaction.

The WP is composed of the following tasks :

  • Task 3.1 Administration of the multi-stakeholder platform, Lead partner : CEDEN
  • Task 3.2. Web Platform Design, Development and Stakeholder Interaction, Lead partner : EP
  • Task 3.3 Synergies with existing regional clusters and associations, Lead partner : IUNG

WP4 : Replication to beneficiary regions (M10-M34)

The objective of this WP is to mobilize the regions to develop bio-based industries in the wood waste value chain and to prepare an innovative environment for collaboration on industrial projects based on the best EU practices for wood waste valorization.

The WP is composed of the following tasks :

  • Task 4.1. Joint research agendas on wood waste valorization with industries and research entities in the recipient regions, Lead partner : CEDEN
  • Task 4.2. Strategy documents to develop wood waste industrial ecosystems, Lead partner : Biomass Normandy
  • Task 4.3. Interaction with regional authorities, Lead partner : IUNG
  • Task 4.4 Development of action plans – replication in recipient regions according to the regional context, Lead partner : Biomass Normandy

WP5 : Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation (M1-M36)

WP5 is to contribute to dissemination and exploitation, in addition to the web-platform developed in WP3 and the communication activities with stakeholders in WP3 and WP4. The objective of the WP5 is first, to gather all communication activities and set up and implement a communication strategy, including the creating of a website and the implementation of a communication plan. On their basis the WP aims to disseminate the project’s objectives, progress and deliverables create in WP1, WP2 and WP3.

The communication and dissemination WP aims to :

  • develop a communication strategy to ensure that awareness about the objectives and results of the project is raised ;
  • disseminate and promote BioReg’s activities amongst key European stakeholders ;
  • ensure the broadest possible outreach and uptake of the project’s services ;
  • ensure the sustainability of the project’s results.

The WP is composed of the following tasks :

  • Task 5.1. Communication Strategy, Lead partner : CEDEN
  • Task 5.2. Dissemination Campaign, Lead partner : EUBIA
  • Task 5.3. Evaluation of the potential for cross-sectoral transfer of knowledge, Lead partner : ARBN

WP6 : Management (M1-M36)

This WP gathers the management activities related to the BioReg project.

The WP is composed of the following tasks :

  • Task 6.3. Knowledge and information flow management, Lead partner : Europroject
